Learn From Their Mistake

Filed under: Politics — The Professor @ 8:37 pm

Last Friday the hacking group Anonymous released a tape of a phone call between the FBI, the UK’s Scotland Yard, and the representatives of several European law enforcement agencies.  The law enforcers were discussing investigations of hackers.

Anonymous claimed that it had hacked into FBI computers, and was able to read the FBI communications continuously.

This is obviously a huge embarrassment to the FBI, but it was clear at the outset this was typical Anonymous bravado. After looking at the email that Anonymous posted on pastebin, it was pretty clear what happened.  The email was sent to 43 people-and hence involved 44 people including the sender.  It listed a call in number and access code.  Given the large number of people on the call, and the sloppy way in which some people handle email, the most likely explanation is that Anonymous got a hold of this one email, dialed into the call, and taped it.

Yesterday the FBI stated that this was indeed what happened:

The FBI has admitted that Anonymous eavesdropped on the conference call, but told the New York Times that the phone call wasn’t hacked. Instead, Anonymous somehow obtained an email containing the conference call login information, which was sent to 44 people at the FBI and overseas agencies on January 13. According to the Times, a foreign police official forwarded the email to a private account, where it was intercepted by Anonymous.

Sloppy handling of email.  Inexcusable, but all too common.

Hackers are a menace, but the most menacing ones aren’t the exhibitionists.  Indeed, obsession with publicity is likely to be their downfall.  The dangerous ones are those who do tremendous damage and don’t brag about it.

The main lesson here is that people doing stupid things are the biggest security risk.   Since everyone who does anything online is a potential victim and target, this is a lesson for everyone.  Take some time to evaluate your online activity. Use complex passwords.  Don’t use the same password for more than one account.  Use an app to store passwords, and to generate strong passwords.

Apparently some cops–even those involved in investigating hackers, remarkably–haven’t figured this out.  Learn from their mistake.

  1. A lot of this comes from the cult of secrecy: of course many things need to be kept secret, but the tendency has been to classify almost anything as some form of secret. This covers one’s A**, and means that one doesn’t have to do unpleasant things such as think, use judgement, etc. It is also very useful in hiding incompetence, borderline criminal behavior, etc.

The unintended consequence of this is that if almost everything is secret, nothing gets “special handling”. Secrets are mundane, and the usual tendency is to let things slip. It is very difficult to maintain constant security standards. One solution is to limit the number of “secrets” and insure that those things that need to be secret follow truly special protocols.

  2. Excellent point. He who defends everything, defends nothing. Of course Russia perfected this folly. For example, the MiG-29 was still classified in the USSR, when photos of it were published in the West. So “Aviation Week” subscriptions in Soviet engineering schools had all pictures of it scissored out.

Consistency and honor isn’t their strong suit.” Hell, that’s like waiting for another post from SWP on four months with no MF Global indictments of Don Corzine and cronies, or Fast and Furious, or a post about the looming thousands of drones the MIC wants flying all over American skies.

For the slightest concern about the rising Washington-directed police state, you’ll have to turn to Drudge, or ZeroHedge, or even that known radical newspaper, the Washington Times:

  6. Accusations of racism and ties to neo-Nazi interests have plagued Paul since the 1990s and have re-surfaced during this campaign. So far Paul has issued standard denials, claiming not to have been aware of the ties between his camp and the racist right and denied authorship of a series of racist newsletters, despite confirmation from his closest staff that Paul signed off on every detail.
    So what’s Paul’s explanation now?

    http://www.care2.com/causes/anonymous-hacks-neo-nazis-finds-ron-paul.html

KGB Putins Wikleaks ideologist Israel Shamir tell us

Historically, liberal views do not get wide support in Russia. Therefore a right-centered party would become a very reasonable choice for the country, Kudrin said –Israel Shamir writing on Counterpunch – His thesis are the Russians will have to decide whom do they hate more: Putin or Communists .

It now turns out that Ermash / Shamir also wrote the foreword to an English edition of the Protocols of Zion displayed. Edition, published in 2008, is published by the Institute for Historical Review, which since 1978 has been a leading exponent of holocaust revisionism and denial. There is reason to believe that this will make it even harder for Ermash / Shamir to keep what little he may have left of credibility as a writer.

  7. Anders, why does everything you link to smack of false flag (especially your ‘Russia terrorist bombings were all an inside job’ propaganda), and all the ‘dirt’ you and Andy find on Paul is run by websites that have existed for just a few months? That pose as fake/liberals/conservatives but always back the Status Quo? Who the heck is ‘Care2’ anyway?

This is about as credible as the stuff certain interests in Russia post on Kompromat.ru.

Tell me, why does the Establishment have to resort to making up such utter bullshit to discredit Paul if he’s just another also-ran, second or third place finishing candidate? What are they so afraid of?

The ‘confirmation from his staff that Paul signed off on racist newsletters’ thus far has been a totally anonymously sourced, single Washington Post story, which the ‘Right wing’ sites like Pajamas Media that normally discount the Post all immediately embraced.

The only person that did step forward by name to accuse Paul of the slightest bigotry was picked up by PJM, and even he says Paul is not anti-Semitic, he just thinks the creation of the State of Israel was a mistake. Which reminds me of those Israeli jokes that G-d told Abraham to move to ‘Canada’ instead of ‘Canaan’. And naturally, this chap didn’t step forward in 08′ when TNR and former Demintern operative James Kirchuk first brought up the dreaded alleged racist newsletters, which once again were no more ‘racist’ than Frontpagemagazine or lots of other respectable right wing sites.

The hacktivist collective Anonymous set out to take down the white supremacist American Third Party (A3P) in what they called “Operation Blitzkrieg” but they may have done much more.

In a document dump that includes private forum messages, emails, organization notes another other information the group found numerous connections between Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and A3P. According to the documents, all hosted here, Paul himself regularly met with many A3P members, engaged in conference calls with their board of directors and engaged in a “bridging tactic” between A3P and the Ron Paul Revolution.

Seriously, you can hurl all kinds of false flag BS at Paul himself, but neither you nor the Establishment wannabe if not actual paid minion Andy can discredit his movement. And that scares your bosses. Because Anders if you really are a Norwegian living in Norway, why are you posting all this junk at 3 a.m. Oslo time?

  13. Ron Paul Exposed As White Supremacist By Anonymous
    February 1, 2012

And it looks like the jig is officially up. Hackivist group Anonymous has announced that not only have they decimated the websites of avowed White Supremacist group American Third Position (A3P) during Operation Blitzkrieg but, in the process, they claim to have accidentally uncovered close ties between the racist group and Ron Paul. Not just the Ron Paul campaign, but Ron Paul himself.

    From the announcement page:

Fellow anons: we are pleased to bring you the dismantling of a major US-based
white supremacist network known as the “American Third Position”(A3P). These
racist losers have chapters across the US, operate several white power websites,
forums and online stores, and are even running a candidate in the 2012
elections. Although they try hard to maintain a professional public image to
camouflage their vile racism, we’re now airing all their dirty laundry all over
the internet. Contained in this major dump are several thousand private forum
messages, personal emails, internal organization notes, names, phone numbers,
home addresses and other information on all of their members and supporters.
It’s time for these cowardly suit and tie white supremacists to sleep with one
    eye open. Scared much?

In addition to finding the usual racist rants and interactions with other white
power groups, we also found a disturbingly high amount of members who are also involved in campaigning for Ron Paul. According to these messages, Ron Paul has regularly met with many A3P members, even engaging in conference calls with their board of directors. Ron Paul’s racist politics and affiliations are already well known, being viciously anti-immigrant, anti-abortion and against gay marriage — not to mention having authored the racist “Ron Paul Papers” and receiving financial support from other white power groups (pictured with Don Black from stormfront.org). Hard to believe Ron Paul draws some support from the left and the occupation movements, especially now that it is confirmed Ron Paul hangs out with straight up racist hate groups.

We put extra effort in ruining the life of A3P webmaster Jamie Kelso. On top of
being on the board of directors of A3P, former $cientologist, and high ranking
Ron Paul organizer, he also is the account owner of german nazi forums and store nsl-forum.org, rhs-versand.com. We went ahead and wiped those websites off the internet as well, dumping private messages and order information. Aside from us releasing his information such as his social security number, address, resume and private discussions, we also heard some folks went on a joyride with Kelso’s credit card and made some lulzy purchases, including sex toy purchases and making donations to the Anti Defamation League and many others. Oops.

We call upon not only other antifascists but all those opposed to white
supremacy to utilize this information and make hell for these white nationalist
scumbags. It is essential if we wish to live in a world free from oppression to
expose and confront racists at their jobs, their schools, at their homes and in
    the streets.

No Dialogue! No sympathy! Destroy White Supremacy!

Anonymous is not known for hoaxes about this sort of thing and there is a large amount of information on the page to sort through. If this is confirmed then that would the end of the Ron Paul phenomena among the Left. It will impossible for any self-respecting liberal to overlook such a connection no matter how much they want marijuana legalized. Nothing justifies willingly associating with White Supremacists.

More on this story as it develops.

And get picked up by useful Corporatist pro-endless war military base empire tools like you.

    Comment by Mr. X — February 9, 2012 @ 3:36 pm

  18. BTW Andy, here’s some useful history for you, from the mainstream website Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO

COINTELPRO tactics included discrediting targets through psychological warfare; smearing individuals and groups using forged documents and by planting false reports in the media; harassment; wrongful imprisonment; and illegal violence, including assassination.[3][4][5] Covert operations under COINTELPRO took place between 1956 and 1971; however, the FBI has used covert operations against domestic political groups since its inception.[6] The FBI’s stated motivation at the time was “protecting national security, preventing violence, and maintaining the existing social and political order.”[7]

Keep that in mind Andy. I hope you aren’t one of their modern day minions.

The program was successfully kept secret until 1971, when the Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI burglarized an FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania, took several dossiers, and exposed the program by passing this information to news agencies. Many news organizations initially refused to publish the information. Within the year, Director Hoover declared that the centralized COINTELPRO was over, and that all future counterintelligence operations would be handled on a case-by-case basis.[15]

Further documents were revealed in the course of separate lawsuits filed against the FBI by NBC correspondent Carl Stern, the Socialist Workers Party, and a number of other groups. A major investigation was launched in 1976 by the Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities of the United States Senate, commonly referred to as the “Church Committee” for its chairman, Senator Frank Church of Idaho. However, millions of pages of documents remain unreleased, and many released documents have been partly, or entirely, redacted.

In the Final Report of the Select Committee, COINTELPRO was castigated in no uncertain terms:

Many of the techniques used would be intolerable in a democratic society even if all of the targets had been involved in violent activity, but COINTELPRO went far beyond that…the Bureau conducted a sophisticated vigilante operation aimed squarely at preventing the exercise of First Amendment rights of speech and association, on the theory that preventing the growth of dangerous groups and the propagation of dangerous ideas would protect the national security and deter violence.[13]

Sen. Church was a Republican from Idaho, I believe.

And once again, think I’m exagerrating? Read this about the FBI targeting folks who believe in a gold standard as potential terrorists:

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/believe-return-gold-standard-you-are-now-officially-extremist-according-fbi

    Comment by Mr. X — February 9, 2012 @ 3:43 pm

  19. Let that sink in. The U.S. government is announcing that folks who advocate for the gold standard or don’t like the IRS…all organizations created post-1913…are potential terrorists or subversives. One can only imagine the equivalent response if Russian documents saying as much about Russian citizens were leaked to Moscow Times or somesuch how you and Anders would react. But once again, your and SWP’s faith in the good intentions of Washington, or at least of the national security state, seems bottomless.

    Comment by Mr. X — February 9, 2012 @ 3:45 pm

  20. And BTW, if gold bugs are such dolts and economic doom, boom and gloomers, how have they succeeded in taking over the Chinese government and its holdings?

he same way it disclosed its shocking gold expansion back in April 2009 when overnight its gold holdings went from 600 tonnes to 1054 tonnes:

Shanghai/Beijing: China disclosed on Friday that it had secretly raised its gold reserves by three-quarters since 2003, increasing its holdings to 1,054 tonnes and confirming years of speculation it had been buying.

Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), told Xinhua news agency in an interview that the country’s reserves had risen by 454 tonnes from 600 tonnes since 2003, when China last adjusted its state gold reserves figure.

The confirmation of its surreptitious stockpiling is likely to fuel market talk about Beijing’s ability to buy secretly and its ambitions for spending its nearly $2 trillion (around Rs100 trillion) pile of savings. And not just in gold: copper and other metals markets are booming thanks to China’s barely visible hand.

Speculation has gathered speed over the last year, since the tumbling dollar has threatened to weaken China’s buying power—and give it yet more reason to diversify into gold, oil and metals.

Not only that, but consider our post from September 2011: “Wikileaks Discloses The Reason(s) Behind China’s Shadow Gold Buying Spree”

Wondering why gold at $1850 is cheap, or why gold at double that price will also be cheap, or frankly at any price? Because, as the following leaked cable explains, gold is, to China at least, nothing but the opportunity cost of destroying the dollar’s reserve status. Putting that into dollar terms is, therefore, impractical at best, and illogical at worst. We have a suspicion that the following cable from the US embassy in China is about to go not viral but very much global, and prompt all those mutual fund managers who are on the golden sidelines to dip a toe in the 24 karat pool. The only thing that matters from China’s perspective is that “suppressing the price of gold is very beneficial for the U.S. in maintaining the U.S. dollar’s role as the international reserve currency. China’s increased gold reserves will thus act as a model and lead other countries towards reserving more gold. Large gold reserves are also beneficial in promoting the internationalization of the RMB.” Now, what would happen if mutual and pension funds finally comprehend they are massively underinvested in the one asset which China is without a trace of doubt massively accumulating behind the scenes is nothing short of a worldwide scramble, not so much for paper, but every last ounce of physical gold…

The fiat money order that sustains troops in far outposts of Empire like little Georgia is falling apart Andy. And that’s bad news for you if you’re still on Uncle Sam or Uncle United Kingdom’s teet. Better buy some farm land in Georgia, pronto.
