Catch as Catch Can
Posting may be intermittent in the coming weeks. I’m off on a trip to Europe. First, I’m going with my dad on a long planned trip to WWII battlefields in France, Belgium, and Holland. We’ll start in Normandy, and then follow the route of XX Corps (of Patton’s Third Army) across France. We’ll mix in a few WWI sites (Verdun, the Meuse-Argonne, including the site of Alvin York’s heroics) before following the route of 4th Armored into Bastogne. We’ll tour the Bulge battlefield, and then head north following the events of Market Garden ending in Arnhem. My dad leaves from Brussels, so we’ll switch centuries and see Waterloo. Then I drive to Switzerland where I will teach for 3 days at Universite de Geneve.
Internet access in Europe is spottier than here, so posting will be at the mercy of that.
‘Til whenever.

Ahem. There is no problem with internet access in Europe or even the CIS. You can find a hotspot in most cafe’s or a dedicated internet shop most anywhere, just show your passport for scanning. If all else fails you can post from your smart phone as I will assume you have roaming. You can if all else fails purchase a SIM card and a USB device that would allow you to access your email at the very least.
Really, where do these quaint ideas come from?

@TRex. I’ve traveled in Europe more than you can possibly imagine, so don’t presume to tell me about ease of access; at least 5-6 weeks/year for the last 3 years. Believe it or not, I’m not going to sit down and write SWP posts in an internet cafe while the meter is running, or on my smartphone. In the hotels, it is dicey.
So, the quaint ideas come from experience, son.
I’m 50. I’m not your son.

I have had my share of non-functioning Internet access in hotels. As well as Internet access being non-free, i.e. chargeable, for hotel guests. In Germany, not in Albania.
I also have an impression that Internet access for a traveller in Europe is quite often problematic. Despite wide availability of all the advanced Internet features for residents. Strange but true.
Are there places in Europe with free wi-fi access, like a Burgher King or a Starbucks in the US? Not 3G or 4G or whatever cellular – but true wi-fi, with ADSL-level speeds at least?

@TRex. Obviously. My son wouldn’t have been such a smug jerk. You condescended to me, I returned the favor.
Have a good trip Prof. Looks like the Chinese are raising wages! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/business/global/07foxconn.html?src=busln
Will the wheel of manufacturing return to US again? 🙂
