VU and Lou Reed Don’t Believe Hillary. Should We?

Filed under: Politics — The Professor @ 7:32 pm

An independent review board released a scathing report about the State Department’s “systemic” failures in protecting the consulate and annex in Benghazi.  But it names no names.  It’s like the Monty Python Dead Bishop skit: “It’s a fair cop, but society is to blame.”

But when “the system” is blamed, no one is accountable.  And when no one is accountable, the “system” will continue to fail, and people will die.

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to testify about the Benghazi catastrophe, but allegedly fainted due to dehydration, hit her head, and suffered a concussion that makes her incapable of appearing. But I’m confused. The Velvet Underground told me years ago “that women never really faint.” So whom should I believe? Hillary, or Lou Reed?

  1. I’ve not heard much of the Velvet Underground, but the more I hear the more I’m inclined to get some of their stuff. That Sweet Jane is great.

  2. @Tim-VU is really before my time, and certainly before yours, but they had some good stuff. High variance, though. Some of it a little too 60s-hippy-dippy for me, but some of it excellent. Lou Reed also performed/performs a lot of Velvet Underground material. His “Intro/Sweet Jane” from Rock and Roll Animal is excellent.

Glad you liked the Sweet Jane vid.

  3. Tim, Prof: That was a nice version of SJ, but the best, bar none, is on Lou’s Rock and Roll Animal (1974): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoytmVwcsB4 followed by Heroin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7Ch4O7wmuY … this is what made rock ‘n roll rock ‘n roll. EPIC … worth picking up the CD and blasting these two tracks really loud — a 21-minute satori if you’ve got a good system …

Thanks for another great year on the blog, Prof. I’m looking forward to 2013. Happy holidays!

  4. @markets.aurelius. Beat you to it! Look at the comment just above yours. Great taste!

I went with the version I did b/c it was video . . . all the YouTube versions from Rock & Roll Animal were just the audio.

This is unbelievably stupid. Putin’s half-baked and doomed attempt to prevent China from dominating Eurasia is actually Soviet Union 2.0? Of all the reasons to criticize Russia, this is it?

  6. No one would have believed her either is she had claimed-it’s that time of the month and I just feel too bitchy right now.

  8. I think the “smartest women alive” and current Sec. of State ran smack up against the truth and bumped her head. It will probably cause selective memory loss about events surrounding Benghazi and all other controversies that inquiring minds want to know about.

  9. @Bob-that’s a pretty persuasive explanation.

@So? That was filmed 2 days before I started at the Naval Academy. I remember being ticked that I was going to miss the Skynyrd show at Soldier Field on the 10th of July. (Also on the bill: Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, .38 Special, Journey.) And then they had the plane crash that October (the day before my birthday). So I never did get to see the real Skynyrd. Good to watch the video. Thanks.

  10. Having dug out the original, I actually prefer the increased tempo version their playing live in that video. The riffs are really good though, similar to the one in Sister Ray, the other VU song I know. I’m trying to check out your other link now, but the hotel wi-fi is really crap. Thanks, though.

  11. Maybe hot flashes can cause dehydration.

  12. In other news… The putriots claim that the Magnitsky Act must be fought because it can be arbitrarily expanded. So they came up with the adoption ban. A self-fulfilling prophecy, I say!
